Exploring the rainforest on four wheels is an unforgettable experience, but it requires more than just a sense of adventure.

To ensure your family’s safety and the integrity of our equipment, we follow strict protocols that every rider should know before booking.

The Driving Test: Why We Prioritize Skill Over Speed

Safety is our North Star. For example, Costa Rica’s terrain is technical. Therefore, every rider must complete a driving assessment before entering the trail.

  • The Briefing: Before heading to the trails, every rider undergoes a mandatory safety orientation where guides explain throttle and brake control.
  • The Assessment: After the briefing, every guest must pass a driving test. If a rider cannot safely manage the vehicle
  • Expert Tip: Driving an ATV is different from a car. Listen closely to the instructions on body positioning and communication signals used on the trail.

Daily Trail Inspections: No Inspection, No Tour

We do not operate on “guesswork”. Every single morning, a designated guide performs a mandatory inspection of all trails to be used that day.

During this inspection, we clear several hazards to keep the route safe:

  • Obstacles: For instance, we remove fallen branches and rocks larger than 35 cm in diameter that could obstruct the path.
  • Terrain Integrity: In addition, we identify terrain deterioration caused by water or natural erosion.
  • Wildlife Awareness: At the same time, we monitor wildlife activity such as venomous snakes.
  • Water Safety: For our Jet Ski tours, we use CHIRP Sonar technology to map the lake floor and avoid submerged hazards.

In addition, when you sign our rental agreement you assume responsibility for the vehicle.

  • Pre-Tour Inspection:Before the tour begins, we encourage every guest to inspect their vehicle, including brakes, tires, and lights.
  • Responsible Riding: Similarly, like a rental car, guests are responsible for damage caused by reckless riding.
  • Why it matters: Keeping our fleet in top conditions ensures every guest has a safe, reliable ride.

Most importantly, our guides are the engine of our company.

  • Certifications: For this reason, every guide must hold up-to-date certifications.
  • Professional Gear: Guides carry a specialized kit including ISO-certified emergency whistles, first aid kits, and high-range radios.
  • Medical Partners: We follow a 5-step emergency protocol with direct contact to a trusted local emergency services.

Reality Check: Is this an Adrenaline or Nature Tour?

However, if you are looking for a high-speed race, this might not be the tour for you.

FAQ: What to Expect on Your Outback Adventure

Yes. Every rider must pass a 5-minute safety briefing and driving assessment before hitting the trails. Because Costa Rica’s rainforest terrain includes steep inclines and uneven paths, we must verify that every driver can safely control the vehicle. If the test isn’t passed, we offer a switch to a Side-by-Side (SBS) or a refund.

Safety is our priority over speed. We maintain a controlled pace (usually under 20 mph) to manage dust levels, protect local wildlife, and ensure every rider has enough reaction time for terrain shifts. Our tours are designed as nature and adrenaline experiences, not high-speed races.

When you sign our rental agreement, you agree to drive responsibly and follow the guide’s rules. Just like a rental car, guests are responsible for damages to lights, plastics, or mechanical parts caused by improper handling. We encourage you to inspect and photograph your vehicle before the tour starts.

Every Outback Adventures guide must have a minimum of 2 years of experience and hold up-to-date certifications in First Aid and Land/Water Rescue. They carry ISO-certified whistles and high-range radios to communicate directly with our office and medical partners.
