ATV vs zipline in La Fortuna: which adventure is right for you?

Most people planning a trip to La Fortuna hit the same wall at some point: ATV or zipline? You’ve seen both in photos, both sound good, and you probably have budget for one — maybe two if the timing works out.

The thing is, they’re not really competing. One puts you on the ground, moving through the landscape with someone who knows it. The other puts you above the canopy for a few fast, open-air minutes. Same volcano in the background. Completely different experiences.

ATV riding in La Fortuna: the ground game

You’re moving through rainforest when your guide slows the group down. Not for safety there’s a toucan sitting a few meters off the trail, and he wants you to see it before it goes.

That’s the rhythm of an ATV tour in La Fortuna. You’re not racing. Instead, you’re covering ground with someone who knows what’s out there and when to stop.

The routes mix open stretches with volcano views, stream crossings, and sections of working rainforest that don’t show up on the typical tourist itinerary. Some parts you move fast. In other sections, you cut the engine and just look around.

What Outback does and no other ATV operator in La Fortuna does is include a stop at a Maleku indigenous community. The Maleku are one of Costa Rica’s few remaining indigenous groups, and their land runs through the same territory the tour covers. As a result, it’s the part of the day people tend to bring up when they get home not the mud or the speed. That stop.

Who is ATV best for?

  • Travelers who want to move through the landscape rather than observe it from a distance
  • Family-Friendly Adventures: Tours are open to ages 5+, with Side-by-Side options available for all ages
  • Groups where not everyone has the same energy level or mobility the vehicles handle a range of passengers, including people with mobility limitations
  • First-time visitors who want to leave with a real sense of where they were, not just what they saw

What to expect

Tours run 2–3 hours and cover 15–25 km of mixed terrain. There’s a full safety briefing before you leave if it’s your first time on an ATV, that structure matters more than you’d expect.

Helmets and gear are provided. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty and closed-toe shoes. That’s the full prep list.

May through November is the green season, which means higher river levels, more vivid colors, and the rainforest doing what it does best. Good time to go.

Ziplining in La Fortuna: the sky rush

Zipline is a different proposition. Essentially, you’re above the canopy, not in it — clipping into a harness, stepping off a platform, and letting the cable do the rest. Near Arenal, some cables run up to 750 meters. On a clear day, the view of the volcano from up there is something.

It’s a sharper, faster kind of experience. In other words, less about exploration, more about the moment itself.

Who is the zipline best for?

  • Travelers who specifically want the aerial perspective the view from above is the point
  • People after a short, intense rush rather than a longer immersive experience
  • Groups where everyone is comfortable with heights and meets the operator requirements
  • Visitors who’ve already done ATV and want something different this trip

What to expect

A zipline tour runs 2–3 hours total and typically covers six to ten cables. Harness, helmet, and gloves are standard. Guides are at each platform. The actual time in the air all cables combined adds up to roughly 6–10 minutes. The rest is walking between platforms and waiting for the group to move through.

Most operators near Arenal have a weight limit around 250 lbs (113 kg) and age minimums that vary. Worth confirming before you book if you’re traveling with kids or have any concerns.

Outback specializes in ATV. Zipline works well as a complement to the morning if you want to fill out the day but it’s not something Outback operates directly.

Which one should you choose?

If you’re traveling with kids under 10, the decision largely makes itself. Most zipline operators have age and weight requirements that rule young children out. The Outback Side-by-Side, however, takes kids from age 3 everyone goes together.

For adults-only groups it comes down to one question: do you want to be in the landscape or above it?

ATV is your ride if you want to actually cover ground streams, trails, wildlife, and a stop at a community that’s been on this land for generations. If the Maleku visit sounds like the kind of thing you’d still be talking about two weeks later, then that’s your answer.

Zipline makes more sense if you’re specifically after the aerial view, everyone in your group meets the requirements, and you want one fast, concentrated rush before moving on with the day.

One practical note: green season (May–November) is genuinely the best time for ATV in La Fortuna. As a result, the rivers are up, the landscape is at its most alive, and the trails show the rainforest at full strength. Zipline, on the other hand, runs well year-round either way.

Ready to get on the trail?

Both activities are worth doing in La Fortuna. But if you want to be inside the landscape rather than above it moving through it with a guide who knows the land, the wildlife, and the people who’ve lived here long before the tours started the ATV is the cleaner answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

They serve different purposes, so “better” depends on what you’re after. ATV gives you longer ground-level exploration wildlife, terrain, and with Outback, a cultural stop at a Maleku community that no other operator in La Fortuna includes. Zipline is the right call if you specifically want the aerial perspective. Most travelers who do both say they didn’t feel like they were repeating themselves.

Yes, and plenty of people do. Outback’s ATV tours typically finish by late morning, which leaves the afternoon open for zipline and still time for hot springs before dinner. If you want help sequencing the day, the Outback team is a good place to start.

Honestly, it depends on the person. Zipline gives you a sharper, faster burst. ATV gives you more more time, more terrain, more stops. If you’re measuring by how much actually happens during the tour, ATV tends to come out ahead for most people.

TV, in most cases. Outback’s Side-by-Side takes kids from age 3 with adapted seating. Most zipline operators have minimums that make it hard for young children or rule them out entirely. If the kids are coming along, ATV is the safer and more inclusive option.

Both sit in a similar price range roughly $80–$130 USD per person depending on the operator and what’s included. Outback’s ATV tours cover certified local guides, all safety gear, and the Maleku community stop. Always check what’s included before you commit.
